What Actually Happens After You Apply to Become a Big?

One of the most common questions we hear is simple:

“What happens after I apply?”

For many people, the idea of becoming a mentor feels exciting — but also a little intimidating. That’s completely normal. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana, our goal is to make the process approachable, supportive, and centered around building strong relationships from the very beginning.

Here’s a look at what the process actually looks like.

Step One: Learn More

The first step is simply exploring whether mentorship feels like a good fit for you. Many volunteers begin by attending an information session or connecting with our team to learn more about the commitment, expectations, and impact of becoming a Big.

You don’t need special experience to become a mentor. You just need a genuine desire to show up for a young person.

Step Two: Complete Your Application

Once you decide to move forward, you’ll complete an application that helps us get to know you better. This process includes background information, references, and a background check to help ensure the safety and success of every match.

Step Three: Meet With Our Team

Our Enrollment team will guide you through interviews and training designed to prepare you for the mentorship journey ahead. This is also an opportunity for us to learn about your personality, interests, and what kind of match might be the best fit.

Step Four: The Matching Process

One of the most important parts of our work is creating thoughtful, intentional matches between Bigs and Littles.

We take time to consider personalities, shared interests, schedules, and communication styles so relationships can grow naturally and successfully.

Step Five: Ongoing Support

You are never expected to do this alone.

Our team stays connected throughout the life of the match, offering guidance, resources, encouragement, and support along the way. Mentorship is a journey, and we walk alongside both Bigs and Littles throughout the process.

At the heart of it all, mentorship is simply about building a meaningful relationship through consistency, encouragement, and connection.

You do not have to be perfect to make a difference. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply show up.

And for a young person in Acadiana, that consistency can change everything.
