When Kayden decided to try out for his school's track team, he knew exactly who he wanted to tell first.
Luke.
For more than four years, Luke has been a consistent presence in Kayden's life, encouraging him to try new things, build confidence, and believe in himself. So when the opportunity to join the track team came along, Luke was there every step of the way.
Together, they shopped for running shoes, practiced at the park, and prepared for tryouts. Although Kayden didn't make the team that year, the experience became an important lesson in perseverance and self-confidence.
"Even though I didn't make the team, Luke made me feel proud of myself for trying," Kayden shared. "We're going to keep training so I can try out again next year."
That moment captures what makes their relationship so meaningful.
When Kayden first enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters, he was a quiet 9-year-old looking for someone he could trust and connect with outside of home. From the moment he and Luke met, there was an immediate connection. Their first outing, a visit to the Science Museum in Lafayette, revealed just how much they had in common. Both were curious, outgoing, and eager to explore.
Since then, they've shared countless experiences together. They've visited local restaurants, discovered favorite ice cream spots, attended ULL sporting events, and participated in BBBS activities throughout the community. One of their favorite memories is a kickball game during a Bigs and Littles field day, a simple afternoon filled with laughter, teamwork, and fun.
While the activities have created lasting memories, the true impact of their match goes much deeper.
Over the years, Luke has been a steady source of encouragement as Kayden has grown into a more confident and outgoing young person. His mom has witnessed that transformation firsthand.
Before being matched, Kayden tended to stay to himself and spent much of his free time indoors playing video games. Today, he's more willing to try new activities, engage with others, and step outside of his comfort zone. His confidence in social settings has grown tremendously, and his mom credits much of that growth to the positive influence Luke has had in his life.
The relationship has also grown beyond just the two of them. Luke and Kayden's mom, Nicole, have built a strong partnership centered on supporting Kayden's success. Over time, Luke's family has also embraced Kayden, welcoming him into their lives and creating a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the original match.
What began as a mentorship has evolved into something even more meaningful: a trusted friendship built on consistency, encouragement, and genuine care.
After more than four years together, Kayden and Luke's story is a powerful reminder of the impact one caring adult can have in a young person's life. Through every conversation, outing, challenge, and milestone, Luke has shown up for Kayden—and that commitment has helped shape the confident young person he continues to become.
Sometimes, the biggest difference isn't made through grand gestures. It's made by simply being there, year after year, helping a young person believe in themselves.
