Match Moments: A Friendship Built One Moment at a Time

Ngozi + Abbie’s Story

Some of the most meaningful relationships aren’t built through one defining moment. They’re built through all the little ones that happen along the way.

For Big Ngozi and Little Abbie, those moments have added up to something pretty special.

Over the years, their match has grown through conversations, outings, new experiences and simply spending time together. What began as a mentoring relationship has become a genuine friendship — one where both Ngozi and Abbie have learned from each other.

“She taught me how to carry myself better,” Abbie shares.

It’s a simple statement, but one that captures so much of what mentorship can mean in the life of a young person.

Growing Together

When Ngozi and Abbie first met, neither knew exactly what their relationship would become.

Over time, they found the things that connected them. They’ve explored interests together, worked on school and goals, visited the library, tried STEM activities and, just as importantly, made time to talk about life.

Through those experiences, Ngozi has been someone Abbie can turn to, confide in and learn from. Abbie describes her Big as being like an older best friend — someone who can offer another perspective while still being there to listen.

And the impact hasn’t only gone one way.

Their relationship is a reminder that being a Big isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about showing up, listening, encouraging and being willing to grow alongside your Little.

Those ordinary moments of connection can become something extraordinary when they happen consistently.

The Moments That Make the Match

At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we talk a lot about the impact of mentorship. But that impact doesn’t always happen in ways that are easy to measure or capture in a single photograph.

Sometimes it looks like trying something new together.

Sometimes it’s a conversation after a difficult day.

Sometimes it’s encouragement when a young person needs it most.

And sometimes it’s simply knowing there is another person in your corner.

That’s what Match Moments is about.

Through this series, we’re sharing a closer look at the real relationships behind Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana — the conversations, laughs, milestones and everyday moments that make each match unique.

Ngozi and Abbie’s story is just one of them.

Watch Their Match Moment

As Big Brothers Big Sisters Month comes to a close, the matches keep going.

The relationships being built today will continue tomorrow, next month and for years to come. And there are so many more stories still waiting to be told.

We invite you to watch Ngozi and Abbie’s Match Moment and see what can happen when someone chooses to show up, spend time and be there for a young person.

Because sometimes the biggest impact starts with the smallest moments.
