The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Acadiana is "establishing and supporting mentoring relationships that provide opportunities for positive youth development."
Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana provides
continuous, one-on-one mentoring relationships
for children ages 6-17 from primarily low
income, single-parent homes through carefully
screened volunteers called “Bigs”, who
serve as positive adult role models and
offer support and guidance. After a thorough
interview process with the adult volunteer,
the child, and the child’s parent or guardian,
the “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” is matched
specifically with a compatible child,
who is then referred to as his/her “Little.”
A “Big” and “Little” make a commitment
to be matched for one year’s duration
and can make the decision to renew each
year until the child reaches the age of
18, or family circumstances dictate the
closure of the relationship. The two meet
on a regular basis of at least once or
twice a month (depending on the program)
and do such things as reading books, playing
games, going to the park, or most importantly,
just talking and having fun. Their relationship
is monitored and supported by the professional
Big Brothers Big Sisters staff.
Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Acadiana currently serves
hundreds of Louisiana children in six
parishes.
“ Big Brothers Big Sisters vision is
to provide a mentor to every child who
needs or wants one.”
